Rani Velu Nachiyar (1730–1796) was the first Indian queen to fight against British rule, long before the Revolt of 1857. She was a warrior queen of Sivagangai, known for her exceptional military tactics and bravery.
After her husband was killed by the British, she sought refuge and built alliances to reclaim her kingdom. She is credited with forming an all-women army, the Udaiyaal regiment, which played a crucial role in her successful resistance. She is also known for employing early forms of guerrilla warfare and strategic planning in battle. Her legendary fight against the British has made her an iconic figure in Tamil Nadu’s history, inspiring generations with her courage and leadership.
